Light Up Your Practice with Firefly Pose

Think arm balances are all about brute upper body strength? Think again! While it looks impressive, Firefly Pose is more about finding balance through smart alignment, flexibility, and a playful attitude.

Yes, you’ll need some strength — but not as much as you might think. In fact, Tittibhasana (Firefly Pose) is less about arm power and more about open hips, long hamstrings, and the courage to try (and maybe fall) again and again.


🟧 Why It’s Called Firefly

Fireflies are those magical little creatures that light up the night — glowing from the inside out. Just like them, you have an inner light waiting to shine through your movement and breath.

When you’re in the pose, your extended legs resemble a firefly’s antennae, while your head and torso mimic the shape of its glowing body. It’s not just about the look though — Firefly Pose symbolizes illumination, confidence, and rising from darkness with inner brightness.

🟧 How to Get Into Firefly Pose (Tittibhasana)

Start with a Garland Pose (Malasana) — a deep yoga squat — to warm up the hips and groin.

Step-by-step:

  1. From Garland Pose, lift your hips to about knee height.
  2. Bring your hands behind your heels, fingers pointing forward.
    • Can’t get the palms flat? Place them on blocks!
  3. Bend your elbows (like in Chaturanga arms) and gently lower your inner thighs to rest on your upper arms.
  4. Start walking your feet forward and out. When you’re ready, lift your feet off the floor.
  5. Squeeze the inner thighs tightly against your arms.
  6. Begin to extend your legs forward, keeping your balance.
  7. If you feel stable, straighten your arms to lift and lengthen.

💡 Pro tip: Practice a prep variation by hooking your ankles together. It builds control and teaches you how to balance on your hands before going full-on Firefly.
