"The keyword at Joschi is 'rigor'. Whether through the in-depth anatomy classes, yoga history lessons or hours of teaching practice, the Institute opens students to the broadest possible curriculum. I was among the first group to graduates from the 2012 200-hour class. I found it stimulating, the environment was dynamic and the teachers put their hearts and bodies into preparing us. The small class allowed for a high level of individual attention and my fellow trainees were from all over the world. I would recommend Joschi Institute to anyone seeking a solid foundation for teaching with inspiration. " - Sebastian N.
"I have practiced yoga for 12 years and take my practice rather seriously. At the same time, I'm not at all interested in the cult-y or chant-y studios that abound. Being of Indian descent and having academic and personal knowledge of Indian spiritual traditions, it makes me livid to see the way some of these teachings are thrown into bendy, stretchy yoga classes. At Joschi, I got exactly what I needed--an emphasis on protecting the body, strengthening the muscles, moving in a way that was right for my body (and not just "however your body is inspired to move"...which could be problematic in the end!). It was straight-up exercise with humor, challenge, and intensity. I definitely recommend this studio to anyone and everyone. " - Siddhartha S.
"My first class at Joschi's was almost a year ago; not only was I new to the studio, but I was totally new to yoga. I had prepared myself to be a little intimidated and overwhelmed, but found the exact opposite even on my first day. Monika greeted me (by name!), and Joschi was a warm and giving teacher--pushing me to my limits while still making me feel comfortable and capable. Every day since has been as great as that first one. I've taken yoga & Pilates classes with almost all of the teachers--each brings his / her own perspective to the practice, but the common thread is a commitment to create a fun, inviting, and nurturing environment. Even as the number of students grows, Joschi's studio continues to feel like a private oasis. I feel lucky to have found such a wonderful home for my practice." - Brandi S.
"It gives me great joy to write a fabulous review about an amazing place, Joschi Yoga Lounge. Thanks to all those special folks working there that have helped me and continue to help me forget my personal selfishness, deepen my yoga knowledge and broaden my practice & mind more and more. Practice is the most important part and being able to do it with such a wonderful group of people and in such an amazing space is truly a gift. Joschi, Monika, Meg and Michael have inspired me in so many ways...to find peace and joy within myself and to share that enlightenment with all humanity. Thank you for being you and for sharing it with the world. Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi." - Tom R.
"I love this studio and am very grateful to have been able to practice here. The owners, Joschi and Monika, are wonderful and treat you like family. The space is a gorgeous environment to practice yoga. It's spotlessly clean and simple and serene--gorgeous hard wood floors and I absolutely love the ceiling. But what really makes this place sensational are the superb teachers who give their all to their students with love, patience and a great talent for conveying the beauty of yoga. The other students quickly become familiar faces. The studio is very welcoming and has a neat variety of classes that aren't available at the standard NYC studios." - Jen G.
"Instructors are spot on in how they guide students-gentle but firm encouragement for all. Sequencing in the classes, yoga or Pilates, are creative and challenging for all students increasing mental and physical flexibility and strength. All students are treated the same-with respect, encouragement and honesty. Questions are encouraged and answered. What more could you ask for?" - Terry M.
"I've been attending Joschi Body Bodega since he began his men's class in January, 2009. Joschi, and his studio are stellar. He really "gets" yoga. Like all of my experiences here in New York, I find myself comparing them to my spoiled lifestyle in Los Angeles. In terms of yoga, that was Joseph and Adam at the Hollywood YMCA (vintage 1920s Hollywood for $48 per month). But Joschi delivers... in a lovingly abusive kind of way. (And don't get me wrong... I don't condone abuse... in any manner, other than consensual... and this is it.)
The studio is classically New York, and with style... ebony floors, great lighting, adequate facilities, all presented in a manner that is refreshingly modern with a nod to the vintage nature of the building. (Just ignore the elevator up to the studio that looks and smells like something out of Perry Mason in 1964.)
The classes cater to everyone from beginner to advanced. And when Joschi leads the advanced, it's like manna from heaven." -Michael C.
"I just completed Joschi's four week training last week and I feel it was one of the best things I've ever done. I feel I learned so much in one month, about yoga and about myself, too. I think this studio has some great people you can learn a lot from! They are very knowledgeable and fun. Beside Joschi and Monika who we spent most of our time with, I also really liked Mary, Michael and Hillary. Studio has great modern look and it's very clean and neat at all times. Classes are very fun and pretty challenging. I am sad that my training is over. I highly recommend this place for anyone interested in teacher training or just anyone wanting to practice yoga!
